This month, we are focusing on the theme of Hope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we enter into this time of reflection and prayer, take a moment to breathe and focus your heart on the God of Hope, in whom you have put your trust. I would like to start by offering this blessing from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 5:13,<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we\u2019ll be reading Mary\u2019s song or the Magnificat, from Luke 1:46-55. Mary has been visited by an angel who gave her the unbelievable news that she \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will conceive and give birth to a son\u201d&#8230; Jesus, \u201cthe Son of the Most High,\u201d even though she is a virgin. And Mary believed!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A short time later, Mary visits her older cousin, Elizabeth, who bestows a blessing on her, and Mary responds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with this powerful song of praise! Listen to Mary\u2019s song and ask the Lord to reveal more of His character to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200bLuke 1:46-55<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mary\u2019s Song<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Mary said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy soul glorifies the Lord<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for he has been mindful<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 of the humble state of his servant.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From now on all generations will call me blessed,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for the Mighty One has done great things for me\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 holy is his name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His mercy extends to those who fear him,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 from generation to generation.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has brought down rulers from their thrones<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 but has lifted up the humble.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has filled the hungry with good things<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 but has sent the rich away empty.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has helped his servant Israel,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 remembering to be merciful<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to Abraham and his descendants forever,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 just as he promised our ancestors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary praises God because \u201cHe has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.\u201d The New Living Translation puts it this way, \u201cHe took notice of his lowly servant girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know the God of the universe notices you? How does this truth impact you today? How does it impact your view of yourself or your identity?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary goes on to describe how God extends mercy to those who fear him. Jesus tells us the parable of the unmerciful servant in Matthew 18 to help us understand the depth of God\u2019s mercy toward us. Timothy Keller summarizes it this way, \u201cA king has a servant who owed him a debt of ten thousand talents\u2026An ordinary working person could expect to earn perhaps a single talent a year. [in] today\u2019s terms, the average working class job earns $40,000 a year, that makes the debt $400 billion\u2026why did Jesus introduce such an inconceivable number?\u201d[&#8230;] \u201cThe enormous debt that the servant owes tells us that our debt to God is too large to ever make up.\u201d[&#8230;]\u201cOur only hope is astounding, free grace and forgiveness from God himself.\u201d (A Year with Timothy Keller, p 306)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How has God shown his mercy to you? What is your response to God\u2019s mercy in your life?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pause<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Part 2: Outward Focus<\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we reread this passage, can you think of one young person in your life who needs to hear this word? This video said that belonging boils down to 3 steps: \u201cI am noticed, I am named, I belong.\u201d In this passage, we hear Mary praise God because \u201cHe is mindful of her,\u201d or in other words, \u201cHe notices her.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you think of a young person or a loved one who needs to know that they are noticed? Ask God to bring to mind something that you remember about that person, and take a moment this week to reach out to them and remind them that they are noticed.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pause<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s reflect again on God\u2019s mercy. Mary declares that God fulfills an ancient promise he made to the Israelites by remembering to be merciful. Ask God to bring to mind someone in your life who needs to be reminded of God\u2019s promises, of His great mercy.
