Part 1: Inward Focus<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Welcome. Our theme for this month is the Psalms. The Psalms are <\/span>a \u201ccollection of 150 ancient Hebrew poems, songs, and prayers.\u201d According to the Bible Project, the Big idea of the Psalms is to teach us to \u201cneither ignore our pain nor let it determine our lives. God will fulfill his promises from the Torah and send the Messiah. This book is all about the lament, praise, faith, and hope of God\u2019s people.\u201d (https:\/\/bibleproject.com\/guides\/book-of-psalms\/)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As we enter this time of prayer, let\u2019s take a moment to breathe and rest in the presence of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, we\u2019ll be reading from<\/span> Psalm 46:1, 2 in the New Living Translation:<\/span><\/p>\n

God is our refuge and strength,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0always ready to help in times of trouble.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

So we will not fear when earthquakes come<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and the mountains crumble into the sea.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

This Psalm <\/span>brings to mind the Hymn, \u201cA Mighty Fortress is Our God.\u201d This hymn was written by Martin Luther in 1529. \u201c<\/span>Luther believed the fight was not against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness in the high places (Ephesians 6:12). The hymn captures this spiritual warfare and the unshakable confidence in Christ\u2019s ultimate victory.\u201d (<\/span>link<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

The first verse of the hymn echoes the theme of Psalm 46:1 and 2, God being our refuge and help no matter what we face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA mighty fortress is our God,<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>a bulwark never failing;<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>our helper he, amid the flood<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>of mortal ills prevailing.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Question:<\/span><\/p>\n

What troubles are you facing right now? Are you experiencing spiritual attack? As each situation comes to mind, bring it to God your refuge and strength.<\/span><\/p>\n

(Pause)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Listen to <\/span>Psalm 46:1,2 this time in the NIV:<\/span><\/p>\n

God is our refuge and strength,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0an ever-present help in trouble.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Question:<\/span><\/p>\n

How does knowing God is your refuge, strength and ever-present helper, allow you to face these challenges? Are you able to say, like the Psalmist, \u201cso I will not fear\u2026\u201d?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 2: Outward Focus<\/b><\/p>\n

As I read this passage again, think of someone in your life who is experiencing trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n

God is our refuge and strength,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0an ever-present help in trouble.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

As you listened to the Psalm with this person in mind, how do you sense God directing you to pray for this person?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(Pause)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

How do you sense God is leading you this week to provide encouragement or to help this person?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(Pause)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Part 3: Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n

We will close with an ancient prayer for God\u2019s peace and protection as we entrust ourselves into his care.<\/p>\n

O God,<\/p>\n

From whom all holy desires, all good counsel,<\/p>\n

And all just works do proceed;<\/p>\n

Give to your servants that peace<\/p>\n

Which the world cannot give;<\/p>\n

That our hearts may be set to obey your will;<\/p>\n

And that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies,<\/p>\n

May pass our time in rest and quietness;<\/p>\n

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n

Amen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n
