Part 1: Inward Focus<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Welcome, friends! Our theme today is the Psalms and I\u2019m glad you\u2019re joining me to slow down in God\u2019s presence for a few moments. I invite you to take a few slow, deep breaths\u2026in and out\u2026in and out\u2026notice what happens in your body as you do this. Is there tension you can release? Hurried thoughts you can put aside? Try to let them go as you breathe\u2026in and out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Holy Spirit, we offer you our attention now and we welcome you to nudge us in the direction of your love and your perspective in these moments\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Today our scripture is found in Psalm 121: 7-8. Listen as I read from the New Living Translation:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lord keeps you from all harm<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

And watches over your life<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Both now and forever.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What is your initial reaction to these ideas – that God keeps you from harm and watches over you?<\/span><\/p>\n

Pause<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

What does your reaction tell you about who you currently experience God to be?<\/span><\/p>\n

Pause<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll read our verses again:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lord keeps you from all harm<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

And watches over your life<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Both now and forever.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>What areas or situations in your life do you most need God\u2019s watch and care in right now? Take a moment to tell him about it. Or: where do you feel you\u2019re already experiencing God\u2019s watch and care? Take a moment to thank him for it!<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 2: Outward Focus<\/b><\/p>\n

As I read this scripture again, bring to mind a youth you know who might be in harm\u2019s way\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lord keeps you from all harm<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

And watches over your life<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Both now and forever.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Knowing that youth we care about often experience harm \u2013 sometimes from others, sometimes from themselves \u2013 makes this a hard passage to digest for me. Maybe you also feel this way at times. Take a few moments to speak honestly to God about the harm that it seems he <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span><\/i> prevent in the lives of youth you care about\u2026what do you want to ask him about that?<\/span><\/p>\n

Pause<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

What might it change in the lives of the youth you\u2019ve brought to mind if they believed there was a God who cared enough to watch over them as they come and go, and who desired their wholeness instead of their harm?<\/span><\/p>\n

Spend a minute asking God to reveal himself to these youth in ways they can recognize.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pause<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Closing thought:<\/span><\/p>\n

The verses we\u2019ve read today come at the end of one of the \u2018pilgrim psalms,\u2019 likely sung by God\u2019s people as they ascended the hill up to Jerusalem for an annual festival. They were on their way to worship, perhaps calling to mind what they needed from God in order for a safe journey, and reminding themselves what their faithful God was capable of so they would have courage for their pilgrimage. Maybe we can receive this as a reminder today to trust this same faithful God with our own journeys.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Part 3: Closing Prayer<\/b><\/p>\n

As you take a few more deep breaths\u2026in and out\u2026let\u2019s close with an ancient prayer for God\u2019s peace and protection as we entrust ourselves into his care.<\/span><\/p>\n

O God,<\/span>
\n<\/span> from whom all holy desires, all good counsels,<\/span>
\n<\/span> and all just works do proceed:<\/span>
\n<\/span> give to your servants that peace<\/span>
\n<\/span> which the world cannot give;<\/span>
\n<\/span> that our hearts may be set to obey your will;<\/span>
\n<\/span> and that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies,<\/span>
\n<\/span> may pass our time in rest and quietness;<\/span>
\n<\/span> through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/span>
\n<\/span> Amen.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n
