Youth for Christ is centrally located at Higgins and Main Street, and many youth in this area live in poverty or are at risk of homelessness and ultimately become targets for gangs, prostitution and the drug trade. They are tempted by perpetrators with the promise of a better lifestyle and offered a way out by participating in one or more of these unhealthy activities. Many get trapped in this cycle of poverty and addiction. These youth need the hope Jesus offers!
In 2018, YFC secured the adjacent property at 221 Higgins Avenue which was needed for the current project. The building on this property was located directly in front of the Youth for Christ entrance effectively blocking it from neighbourhood view, making YFC difficult to see and access. The former owners also built a wire fence all around the building effectively making YFC look closed off to the public. With the YFC building backing onto Main Street, many people mistakenly think Main Street is the front of the building, causing much confusion. Higgins and Main is a very busy corner in a depressed area of our city. Many people do not feel safe accessing our building from Main Street.
The goal of our campaign is to open the area in front of the YFC building up with a beautification project that will enhance the area and make it more appealing to the community at large. The new space will draw people into the front entrance, which is 333 King Street, and provide better accessibility and safer entry. The current project will expand much needed parking space for staff and volunteers and create a much safer environment outside for youth using the facility. The space will include better lighting, better visibility and will include easier access to YFC off Higgins Avenue with a drop off loop for parents and/or buses. The front entrance will also be more welcoming to the local community by providing a green-space, a local art feature, and new signage that informs the community of daily activity offerings. Not only will this beautify the area and make it safer, it will encourage local youth in the community to participate and see that YFC is a welcoming place for them to experience and enjoy.
These improvements will encourage more youth and families to explore our facility and access the programming being offered with the hope of getting them involved in healthy activity and away from the temptation of street life. Our staff provide positive peer mentorship to over 11,000 youth annually, and our programs and services offer fun activities and a place of belonging. We also provide meal/snack opportunities and a safe place to talk about spirituality and life challenges, offering support and positive solutions for change.
Our goal is to help every young person coming through our doors to find the hope and potential they have in Jesus! We believe if we can journey with them through their challenging teenage years, and equip them with the resources, support, and tools they need, more of our young people will grow into healthy, capable adults.
