Part 1: Inward Focus

Welcome. As we begin, I invite you to join me in taking a few deep breaths.
Our theme this month is “Justice and Righteousness.”
In Isaiah 48:17–18, we read:
“This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
‘I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you what is best for you,
who directs you in the way you should go.
If only you had paid attention to my commands,
your peace would have been like a river,
your well-being like the waves of the sea.’”
What thoughts or images does this passage evoke for you?
Pause
At first, my thoughts were drawn to the Ten Commandments and all of the laws found in the Old Testament.
It’s difficult to think about these and not focus on all the ways I have come up short.
On further reflection, I was reminded that Jesus was very clear that there is one great commandment: to love God and to love one another.

Part 2: Outward Focus

As we read the passage again, how does it feel to hear these words  paying specific attention to the command to love?
“This is what the Lord says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
‘I am the Lord your God,
who teaches you what is best for you,
who directs you in the way you should go.
If only you had paid attention to my commands,
your peace would have been like a river,
your well-being like the waves of the sea.’”
Are there any specific situations you are facing where love might be the path to peace and well-being?
Pause
As you consider the young people in your ministry, ask God to draw your attention to someone specific you could show His love to this week. Pray for them now.

Part 3: Wesleyan Covenant Prayer

As we prepare to leave this time of reflection, we end with this prayer:

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you, praised for you or criticized for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things to your glory and service.
And now, O wonderful and holy God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, You are mine, and I am yours.
So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it also be made in heaven.
Amen.
