Part 1: Inward Focus
Welcome, everyone.
This month, we are reflecting on the Psalms — prayers that give voice to trust and fear, confidence and longing. The Psalms meet us where we are and gently draw us toward God.
Today we are sitting with Psalm 91, verses 1 and 2.
Before we begin, let’s take a slow breath together;as you inhale, you might imagine yourself capturing all the distractions and competing thoughts, and then as you exhale, imagine yourself releasing all of them, allowing yourself the space to be present to this moment and what Jesus might say to you.
Inhale…
Exhale…
Inhale…
Exhale…
And one more time
Inhale…
Exhale…
Lord, as we come to Your Word, quiet our anxious thoughts.
Slow our hurried hearts.
Help us not just to read Your Word, but to dwell in it.
Open our ears to hear what You are speaking to us today.
Amen.
Listen now to Psalm 91:1–2:
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
As you hear these words, notice what stands out to you — perhaps a word or an image.
Where have you been dwelling lately?
What has been occupying your inner world — your thoughts, your emotions, your energy?
Gently bring that before the Lord.
Pause
What would it mean for you — personally, today — to dwell in the shelter of the Most High rather than simply visit it?
Is there an invitation here to remain… to stay… to lean your weight more fully into Him?
Rest with that.
Pause
What does it feel like to be fully held — fully sheltered — in God’s presence?
Notice the difference between rushing in for protection and actually resting there.
Can you sense what “resting in the shadow of the Almighty” might feel like for you in this moment?
Pause
Part 2: Outward Focus
As we turn outward, bring to mind one young person in your life.
Someone you know by name.
Someone who may be navigating uncertainty, pressure, anxiety, or transition.
Hold them before the Lord as I read the passage again:
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Where might this young person feel exposed right now?
What storms may be pressing against them?
Ask God to shelter them — to draw them close.
Pause
How might you reflect God’s refuge to them this week?
Through your listening… your steadiness… your prayer… your presence?
Ask the Lord to show you one faithful step.
Pause
As you move through your day, carry this image with you:
A shelter.
A refuge.
A shadow that is not dark with fear — but rich with protection and rest.
Consider how remembering that you are held might change your posture today.
Part 3: Closing Prayer
We will close with an ancient prayer for God’s peace and protection as we entrust ourselves into His care.
O God,
from whom all holy desires, all good counsels,
and all just works do proceed:
give to your servants that peace
which the world cannot give;
that our hearts may be set to obey your will;
and that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies,
may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
