Scripture: Philippians 1:9-10
Ben Watts
Part 1: Inward Focus
Welcome everyone. I’m Ben the Director of the youth drop in center, The Switch Yard In Bancroft Ontario, I would like to start today with a prayer from the book of Nehemiah, Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and the host of heaven worships you. Today, we’ll be reading Philippians 1:9-10. As I read the Scripture, turn your thoughts quietly toward the Lord, asking him to open your heart and ears to his voice and word.
Philippians 1:9-10
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
Are you growing in all the qualities of true Godly Love? Is your understanding of love too small? Ask God to open your eyes again to his love for you, reflect on the cross and your faith journey. Think about how Jesus showed love in how he lived and what he said.
Pause
Are you living in purity? Is there any wickedness in your heart you need to repent of?
Pause
What makes you pure and blameless before God?
Pause
Is there anything you need insight from God for in discerning what is best?

Part 2: Outward Focus
As we reread this passage, can you think of one young person in your life who needs to hear this word? Someone who especially needs God’s love and compassion right now?
Philippians 1:9-10
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
Do the youth you serve see the love of Christ in you in how you live with your brothers and sisters in Christ?
Pause
Consider today your understanding of love and continue to seek to grow in your understanding and discernment of what true Godly love is.
Part 2: Closing Prayer
We will close with an ancient prayer for God’s peace and protection as we entrust ourselves into his care.
O God,
from whom all holy desires, all good counsels,
and all just works do proceed:
give to your servants that peace
which the world cannot give;
that our hearts may be set to obey your will;
and that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies,
may pass our time in rest and quietness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
