Some youth have no one. But because of you, they could have someone.

One night a week. Three hours. Enough to change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

Why It Matters

Youth in our community need a safe place and people who show up.

We run drop-in most nights of the week for youth who need somewhere to go, someone to talk to, and someone who genuinely cares. Some of these youth don’t have that anywhere else. Volunteers are the heartbeat of what we do. Without enough of them, evenings close. And when evenings close, those youth lose the one place that was theirs.

A safe space

A structured, supervised environment where youth can just be themselves.

Real Relationships

Consistent adults who show up and genuinely invest in youth.

Hope

Youth hear about Jesus in a way they can actually understand and experience.

Connection to Help

Staff and volunteers connect youth with resources when they need support.

WHAT A NIGHT LOOKS LIKE

You show up at 7. Everything else is taken care of.

Our staff carry the weight of managing the environment. Your job is to be present, build relationships, and share God’s love through how you show up. Here’s what a typical evening looks like:

7:00 PM – Team time

We meet together, pray for each other and the youth, connect as a team, and get a gameplan for the night. Staff will flag anything specific to watch for.

7:30 PM – Doors open

Drop-in begins. Pool, video games, basketball, skate-park, snacks, couches. Youth arrive and you get to be present with them. Connect over a game. Sit with someone. Be there.

9:30 PM – Close and debrief

Youth head out, we clean up together, debrief the night, and pray for the youth we connected with. Out by 10.

*Note: exact timing may vary by location. This is a general picture of what a drop-in evening looks like at both Backstage (Steinbach) and The Mill (Blumenort).

What We're Asking

One night per week. That’s the commitment.

We ask for one consistent evening per week because consistency is what builds trust with youth. They notice who shows up. That reliability is what makes the relationship real. You don’t need a theology degree or a perfect story. You need to love Jesus and be willing to be present for young people who need someone in their corner.

F.A.Q.

Do I need experience working with youth?

No. The most important thing is a willingness to show up consistently and genuinely care about young people. Our staff provide training, orientation, and support throughout the process.

I've heard drop-in can be chaotic. Is it safe?

It can be lively. Our youth are real, and some are rough around the edges. But our trained staff manage conflict and the environment. Your role is to build relationships, not manage chaos. Staff carry that load so you don’t have to.

What does the onboarding process look like?

Once you reach out, we’ll connect with you personally and walk you through everything. That includes an interview so we can get to know you and make sure it’s a good fit for everyone. From there, the process includes a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening and a child abuse registry check. YFC covers the cost of both. We also provide orientation and role-specific training before your first shift. Depending on timing, the full process typically takes a few weeks.

Can I come check it out before committing?

If we’ve already connected with you and you want a feel for what drop-in is like before committing, we welcome that. You’d be closely supervised during a visit, but we want you to know what you’re signing up for. Reach out to us first so we can make an arrangement and make sure it’s a good fit.

Is there a cost to volunteer?

No. YFC Steinbach covers all background check costs. There is no cost to you.

Do I have to be from a specific church?

No. We welcome volunteers from any church background. What matters is that you love Jesus and want to be a consistent, caring presence for youth in our community.

What if the youth don't want to connect with me?

That’s one of the most common fears we hear, and it almost never plays out that way. Youth connect with anyone who is consistent and who makes them feel valued. You don’t have to be cool or have all the answers. You just have to show up and mean it.

Not sure yet? Just reach out.

Let us know you’re interested. We’ll tell you everything you need to know.
