Creating Conversations Helpsheet

Face-to-face conversation is not the preferred type of conversation for teens. Only 1/3 of teens would rather have a face-to-face conversations as opposed to a digital conversation.

Face-to-face communication is an artform that many youth have yet to learn. Eye contact is a vital part of communication that builds connection and empathy. Over the last 20 years signs of empathy in young people have dropped by 40%.

In person conversation is meant to be natural, therefore there is no need to overthink and plan out everything you would say like you would in a text or email.

If you find yourself in a face-to-face conversation and don’t know what to say remember F.O.R.M.:

  • Family (“Tell me a bit about the people who live in your house.”);
  • Obligations (“What are the things you get no choice about doing each week?”);
  • Recreation (“If you had $1000 to spend doing something fun, how would you spend it?”);
  • Motivation (”Why is ____ important to you?”).

Any of these topics can help carry the conversation past any awkwardness.

Show the person that you are interested in what they have to say. Give them your full attention, and do not resort back to your device. Push yourself past your comfort zone. You got this!
