A short update from our ministry in Selkirk

At YFC Selkirk, we feed kids of all ages at each of our programs, and the food is always free. Some can afford to also buy extra snacks and concessions, and some can’t. Some have food at home, and others don’t. But all are offered a chance to eat something filling and healthy, with fresh fruit or veggies on the side.
Most days, the first thing I’ll ask youth after greeting them is “are you hungry?” In the same way as kids having different appetites for food, we realize that the youth that attend our programs also have different levels of spiritual hunger and curiosity. All are in need, but not all may know their need. Some are coming for spiritual food, some for literal food, and others for social needs to be met. We seek to meet all those needs at once, build relationships and trust, and offer those things unconditionally to the youth coming to our programs.
Because of the fire last September, we have not been able to offer our lunch program the way we did in the past, with 30-40 students piling into our building to eat and play together. We are thankful for our temporary rental space, but we really miss being able to give youth the comforts of hosting in our own homey space. We are looking forward to being able to build a new building in place of our old one, and serve the needs of our youth in new and improved ways.
